Patio FAQs
We have no side access. Can you still lay a patio?
Yes. Materials can come through the house or along a back lane. We protect floors and doorways and cut outside wherever possible.
Will a new patio cause damp?
Not if it's laid properly. We keep the surface at least 150 millimetres below the damp-proof course and never cover airbricks.
Which material is best in a shady yard?
Porcelain or a denser, smoother stone. Riven sandstone tends to go green in permanent shade.
Do I need planning permission for a patio?
Usually not for a back garden patio at ground level. Raised patios more than 300 millimetres above ground need permission, and listed buildings may need consent.
What about drainage in a small yard?
We fall the patio to the existing gully, add a channel or soakaway if needed, or use permeable paving.
Can you lay York stone?
Yes, both new sawn York stone and reclaimed-style flags, as well as Indian sandstone and limestone. See natural stone patios.
How long does a patio take?
It depends on size and access. Small yards are quick to lay but slower to supply when everything comes through the house.
Do you cover the villages?
Yes, including Haxby, Bishopthorpe, Copmanthorpe and the Poppletons. See areas.
